NEW TEACHING ORDER
Catholic School At Bryndwr
The coming of a new order of religious teaching sisters to take over St. Patrick’s School, Bryndwr, at the commencement of the school year for 1962, was announced last evening by the Roman Catholic Bishop ot Christchurch (the Most Rev. E. M. Joyce).
Bnshop Joyce’s announcement was a sequel to the acceptance at the General House of the Congregation at Via Nomentana. Rome, by Mother Maria del Rosario. Superioress-General of the Congregation of the Sacred Names of Jesus and Mary. The new order was founded in Spain, and has houses in all European countries. North and South America, and the United Kingdom. The order is world renowned for its work for primary and secondary education, having specialised in every country in the field of modern science teaching. Six teachers from Shantalla, Ireland, will arrive in New Zealand early in January, 1962, to occupy a convent, the building of which will commence soon under the direction of the priest in charge of St. Matthew’s parish, Bryndwr (the Rev. Father S. Kelly). In thanking Mother Enda, Mother-General of the Sisters of Mercy of the Diocese of Christchurch, for the manner in which the Sisters of Mercy had staffed St. Patrick’s School from its beginnings in 1950, Bishop Joyce recalled that it was just 86 years since the first band of Irish Mercy Sisters arrived in Hokitika from Ennis, County Clare, Ireland.
