U.K. Experiment With N.Z. Birds

(Njt. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 28. "Recently the Wildlife Trust of Britain was successful in breeding brown teal from Northland,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz) today. “Three pairs were sent to England in 1957 by the wildlife branch of the Department of Internal Affairs so that an attempt could be made to breed them in captivity as has been done there with other rare waterfowl threatened with extinction. 17113 is possibly only the second time these birds have been bred in captivity and certainly the only time they have bred overseas.

’I am concerned that in Northland, brown teal have been shot illegally. This, with other factors, has brought its numbers to a dangerously low level.” The Minister asked the people of Northland to protect the brown teal. “Don’t shoot them, don't disturb them unnecessarily. Make sure your dog does not kill or hunt them. Before draining swamps or clearing streams, consider the waterfowl. They must have a place to live,” said the Minister.
