Cycling CANTERBURY CENTRE

Bid For Wider Participation There should be a more enthusiastic approach at centre and club levels, to instil into riders a more aggressive attitude to racing, the president of the Canterbury centre of the New Zea1a n d Amateur Cycling Association (Mr G. W. Clark) reported to the annual meeting of the centre on Thursday.

Only by this type of riding could champions be produced. he said. Many of the present riders took up only one side of the sport, either the track or the road. Mr Clark asked delegates to encourage riders in their respective clubs to compete in both road and track races. A paper on ways and means of improving riding, prepared by a special committee. would go forward to the annual meeting of the New Zealand association for its consideration, the meeting decided. Mr C. G. Clark (Wellington), president of the association, said the paper was certain to be well received. Local Riders

Mr Clark said the national body was very keen to know of the activities of local riders for it intended to send as full a team as possible to the Empire Games at Perth. He asked the centre to keep the association informed of the performances of promising riders who could be Included in the trials.

The meeting decided to make application to the association to hold the 1962 hard track championships in Christchurch.

The meeting decided to sponsor two riders to take part in a three-day event in Auckland later this year.

Hall; permit committee. Messrs G. W. Clark. H. C. Poore; executive committee. Messrs G. W. Clark. H. C. Poore, E. Rondel; chief road patrol. Mr S. F. Poore; auditor. Mr A. K Sutherland; resident delegates to association. Messrs C. G. Clark. R. Carruthers.
