The West German Government will on Friday pay back the whole of its post-war debt to Britain, and part of Its debt to the United States, says the Bonn correspondent of British United Press. For Britain this means £67,500.000 and for the United States 487 million dollars (£209 million). The London debts agreement of February. 1953. fixed Germany’s debt to the United States at 1000 million dollars (£357 million) to be paid back over a 30 year period Germany paid back 150 million dollars <£s3 million) on March 31, 1959. When it makes Friday’s payment, it will owe just over 200 million dollars (£7l million), and on this it will pay 2.5 per cent, from July, 1961 to July, 1965 Originally Germany wanted the United States to regard 200 million dollars as compensation for German assets seized at the start of the war, but the United States refused.
