CHIROPODY SERVICES
Extension Not Approved The North Canterbury Hospital Board wants to provide chiropody services to its patients at the Princess Margaret and Burwood Hospitals, in addition to the present service at the Christchurch Hospital, and to increase the remuneration to its chiropodist. The Hospitals Advisory Council, however, considers chiropody services provided by hospital boards should be confined to geriatric patients on medical prescription, and the Health Department has advised the board accordingly.
While it was not proposed to ask the board to review its existing services, the department stated, no extension would be approved and the proposal to increase the chiropodist’s remuneration was not considered favourably. The board decided yesterday to try to convince the department of the desirability of extending the service to inpatients referred by its orthopaedic surgeons. The question of increased remuneration is under action by the board’s finance committee.
