Civil Defence Appointments

Dr. T. Morton, medical superintendent of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, has been appointed medical officer for civil defence in North Canterbury, with the deputy superintendent (Dr W. I. Paterson) to act in his place where necessary. The appointments were made yesterday by the hospital board at the request of the regional Commissioner for Civil Defence ‘Brigadier J. T. Burrows). The chairman of the board (Dr. V C L. Averill) said that the board’s interest must not remain “a pious resolution." He asked Dr. Morton for reports on the progress of civil defence preparations. The board also asked Dr. Paterson to form a civil defence study group within the jurisdiction of the board to define civil defence objectives for the board, and suggest preliminary planning requirements.
