BY-ELECTION IN CITY
Minister Asked For Views At the request of the chairman of the City Council’s finance committee (Cr. H. P. Smith), the ActingTown Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie) has written to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz) asking whether the Minister intends to initiate any legislation which could affect the by-election necessary to fill the vacancy on the council created by the death of Cr. W. J. Cowles. The Minister recently opposed the expense of an election to fill one vacancy on a local authority. Meanwhile, in accordance with the Local Elections and Polls Act, the Returning Officer (Mr H. S- Feast) has been notified of the vacancy. He must appoint a day for a by-election not less than 35 nor more than 42 clear days after the receipt by him of the notice of the vacancy. Some thought is being given to the possibility of holding a poll on the town hall site if a by-election is inevitable.
