MEAT TRADERS’ TOUR

Europe And North America Representatives of three Neu- Zealand-owned meat exporting companies - ‘-wiß leave this week on a tour of Europe and North America. They are Mr C. P. Agar (chairman of directors of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company. Ltd.), Mr W. M. Cleland (general manager of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company), Mr L.\ jJL. Cameron (general manager of the Gear Meat Company. Ltd.), and Mr V.r& Vial 'general manager - at th* Southland Frozen Company. Ltd.). The three companies jointly own lowers, Ltd., London, a wholesale meat firm. I A food faieta Italy will t* one of the first engagements for the mission. New Maland exporters, in co-opera-tion with the New Zealand Meat Producers* Board, will exhibit lamb at the Bologna Food Fair to be held next month. Mr Cleland.atid that New Zealand meat exporters hoped the Botova fair would provide an opportunity to expand the sates of New Zealand meat in Maly. Bologna was the ilfnary centre of Italy, and the fair there should prove most helpful to the trade. ’> 4 . The mission wiH also study the marketing of New Zealand casings in Italy and elsewhere on the Continent. In Britain the four men will see the most recent developments in the meat trade, and on their return trip by vnw of North America they will study the United States and Canadian markets for lamb, pelts, and casings. Mr Cleland said an important aspect of their trip would be their interviews with traders handling packaged lamb cuts from New Zealand This was a development pioneered by the three companies concerned in this trip. At this stage of the trade it was essential for the exporters to find out whether they were supplying the right commodity, and whether improvements could be made in its packaging, transport, or distribution.
