BOMB IN POLICE CHIEF’S BOAT
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A J (Rec. 7 p.m.) BELFAST, May 5. The police believe that an explosion in a motor-boat owned by the man who is directing antiterrorist operations in Northern Ireland was a deliberate attempt to blow the bottom out while he was aboard. The explosion, in the boat’s exhaust manifold, occurred yesterday while Sir Richard Pirn, In-spector-General of the Royal Ulster Constabulary, and Lady Pirn were testing their boat on Strangford Lough, County Down. A detonator apparently caused the blast. It was attached to a fuse leading to an explosive charge under the engine. Sir Richard Pirn cut the fuse and took the boat back to its mooring. Sir Richard Pirn has been responsible, under the Minister of Home Affairs, for operations against the Irish Republican Army. Two years ago, a parcel of poisoned mince-pies was delivered to his house.
