LYTTELTON NEWS

Borough Council Meets X

A petition from eight residents of Cass Bay asking that street lights be installed at two dangerous corners was received at a meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening. Cr. G. C. Hay said there was considerable traffic on the road at all hours. The installation of street lighting would assist in protecting the 18 children in the bay. The borough electrical overseer (Mr A. B. P. Large) was instructed to report on the best method of providing street lighting at the bay. The council decided to give favourable consideration to an application from the Diamond Harbour Scouts’ Association to purchase a section on which to efect a den. The application was referred to the chairman of the estates committee (Cr. A. M. Miller) and the Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson) for a report. Navy Establishment A letter from the Naval Board. Wellington, informed the council that the Navy establishment at Lyttelton known as Tasman was no longer in use and the Navy was preparing to vacate the area. The buildings would be sold for removal by the Disposals Board. He was a bit disappointed at the decision to sell the buildings, said the Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs). He had understood that some, at least, would be available to organisations needing such buildings. It now appeared that the buildings were to be offered on the open market. It. would perhaps be possible to| get some of the buildings for such organisations, said Cr. A. R. Champion. They would have to have the land to put them on. He moved that the council write to the Naval Board asking if any buildings would be made available to such organisations. The motion was carried. Grants made by the council were: Canterbury Progress League. £10; Lyttelton Sub-centre of the St. John Ambulance Association, £6O.
