YOUNG FARMERS’ JUDGING

National Event At Addington Tomorrow will be one of the big days of the year for the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs. About 135 young farmers from many parts of New Zealand in at least 14 district teams will gather in Christchurch for the annual New Zealand stock j judging contest, which will be held at the Addington Show Grounds. The young farmer judges will test their judging capabilities on stock worth more than £2OOO provided by local farmers. They will review Southdowns. Corriedales, Romneys and fat sheep, dairy and beef cattle, pigs and horses. District teams comprising at least five members will compete for the national teams’ championship. At Pukekohe last year and at Gore in the previous year the Christchurch district team was first. This year Christchurch district teams were first and second in the Canterbury council contest at Ashburton. The Christchurch district team for tomorrow’s event will be M G. Johns (St Andrew’s College). J King (Ladbrooks). G. J. Johnstorr (Sheffield). J. A. Johns (St Andrews). B. Glenday (Sheffield). N Wright (Sheffield). G. Foster • St. Bede’s College), and P. Jebson (Sheffield) Team members may judge in all other classes than those in which they compete for the teams’ contest for the highest aggregate award Judging in Seven Classes The contest will take most of the day to complete. For the first time at a national contest judging in seven classes will go on simultaneously; in the , past four classes have been judged in the morning and four in the afternoon. Horse judging will be carried out at the middle of the day with one group doing its judging while the other has lunch A demonstration by the horse judge will follow, and the other seven judges will give similar demonstrations later in the afternoon. The judges for the contest will be: Messrs I. Oakley (Romneys) T E. Brooks (Southdowns), M. M Fleming (beef cattle), D. R. Petrie (pigs), J. G. Blakely (horses). W D Ryan (fat sheep), H. C. A Sidey (Corriedales), and J J Hughey (dairy cattle). The district chairman. Mr D. J. Fechnej' of Darfield, will be grand marshal and he will be assisted by the Dominion vice-president, Mr A Wright, of Sheffield. Trophies will be presented at a function in the Yaldhurst Hall in the evening. Mid-Canterbury Team The following team will represent the Young Farmers’ Clubs ol lhe Mid-Canterbury district at the national stock judging contest which will be held in Christchurch tomorrow: D. Scott (beef cattle); A. Blair (horses); N. Trounce (dairy - cattle); E. Bryant (pigs); J. Cameron (fat sheep); G. Marshall (Corriedales); R. McLenaghen (Southdowns); and N. Early (Romneys)
