Sand And Shingle

Sir,— Sand and shingle, the subject of a recent article in “The Press,” is a valuable asset, but noone has tried to capitalise on it. I remember one of the members of the Progress League speaking on the possibilities of exploiting the sand and shingle in the Waimakariri riverbed. The league was not interested then. The same person tried to interest the Catchment Board, but was told it was not the board’s responsibility to enter into industry. Rather than increase taxation on the unfortunate ratepayer, why not exploit the wealth lying in the riverbeds? If no member or officer of the board is capable of dealing with this, I would suggest a meeting of engineers and entrusted persons to discuss the marketing of the shingle from the Waimakariri, considered by authorities among the best concrete aggregate in the world. The North Island is starving for shingle. So is Australia. Markets are available.—Yours, etc., CONCRETER. May 7, 1957.
