ENGLISH AMATEUR TITLE

South African Wins

(N.Z. Press Association^jCopyright) (Rec. 8.15 p.m.) HOYLAKE (Cheshire), May 4. Arthur Walker, a 27-year-old estate executive from South Africa, today won the English amateur golf championship, beating Gordon Whitehead, of Manchester, 4 and 3, in the 36-hole final.

This victory for a player who qualified for a closed championship because his father was a Londoner, will probably lead to an alteration of rules governing entry and also playing in England’s national team. Under present rules. Walker, as champion., should lead England in the home international matches later in the year. But this would entail another trip from South Africa, as Walker will return home after playing in the English and British championships.
