SHEEP DOG TRIALS

Provincial Events At Waikari

! Heavy rain marred the final day | of the Canterbury provincial sheep 'dog trial championships at I Pyramid Valley, Waikari, on Saturday. But although the per- | formance of many dogs was affected by the wet weather some excellent work was seen. The outstanding feature of the trial was the performance of E. Brown’s 18-month-old Lomond, which in its first trial won the Canterbury huntaway championship and also worked creditably in the straight huntaway. Lomond was repeating the success of its sire Chong, also owned by Mr Brown, which died last year after winning the South Island huntaway championship at Blenheim. A musterer, Mr Brown is head shepherd at Mount White station. Roy, a 4-year-old dog entered by P. Gibbs, of Wakefield, Nelson, also performed well to win the provincial straight huntaway championship by half a point from W. E. Hazlett’s Joe. Roy is a grandson of Rough, one of the most successful huntaway dogs in the Nelson-Marlborough district a few years ago. Mr W. M. Chinn, of Harewood road, Christchurch, completed his mustering season at Esk Head Station. Hawarden, by winning six special trophies with his two dogs—Bruce, a huntaway winning four, and Boy. a header winning one and one in conjunction. He also won the Musterers’ Re-union Challenge Cup for competitors who work in country above 3000 feet. Southland Competitor

The only Southland competitor in the trial, Mr Hazlett, with his dog Ray won the provincial yarding championship by one point from T, E. Burwell’s Trim. Ray has been a most consistent competitor in the Otago-Southland area and was placed in the New Zealand championships at Blenheim last year. Rosemary Hassall, a Hawarden school girl, won the children’s trial for the second year in succession.

M. B. Forrester, who gained fourth place in the district straight huntaway was at the first meeting held by the club more than 60 years ago. He has since been an active administrator of the club’s affairs and a regular competitor at trials. Several other well-known dog trial personalities were present including Messrs Donald McKay, John Grieve, James Brown. Malcolm and Owen Peake and William Galletly.

The grounds marshal was Mr H. Inch who. has had many years association wit the Waikari Collie Club as a competitor and administrator. Mr W. Fincham, the secretary, has held office for 12 years. A new type of handy event introduced by the club this year, and based on the event run by the Mayfield Club, was well supported by local farmers.
