14 Persons Injured In Wellington Accidents

WELLINGTON, May 5.

Fourteen persons were injured in the Wellington district between 4 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. yesterday. During the two and a half hour period, the Wellington Free Ambulance was working 14 cars and had eight men coping with calls. Eight people were injured in a multiple accident on the Hutt road in what was described tonight by a traffic-office spokesman as “absolutely chaotic conditions.’’ Those injured in this accident are:—Mr K. Boyce, Mr A. Boyce, Trevor Boyce, aged 4, Judith Boyce, aged 2s, all of Mahina Bay. Mr G. F. Fink, Kenyon street, Ngaio Lawrence Chapman, 17 years, of View road. Clive Robson, 16 years, OnepU road, Lyall Bay, and F. Romazzuk, Kensington street, Wellington.

The series of accidents on the Hutt road, involving from 11 to 14 cars, commenced when shortly after 4 p.m. a small car travelling north skidded on the wet slippery surface, jumped the safety strip, collided with a car travelling south. This south-bound car in turn smashed into a car parked on the side of the road. Meanwhile, north-bound traffic piled up in two lanes and two nose-to-tail accidents occured. South-bound traffic in one lane was already nose to tail, but the outer line was clear except for one car. Another car pulled out from the inside lane, smashed into the rear of the first car, sending it across the safety strip on to the other sjde of the road.

Other accidents occuring during the two-and-a-half-hour interval involved the collision of two vehicles in Waterloo quay, where the driver and passenger of one car were injured. They are: R. P. Barber, R.N.Z.N., Breaker Bay, and I. G. Holland, R.N.Z.N.. Breaker Bay.

The driver of a car which crashed into a bank in the Ngaio gorge suffered shock, lacerations to scalp, and other head injuries. He is: S. D. Palmer, fisherman, Bay street, Petone. Don Young, market gardener, Ohakune, suffered shock and head Injuries when his car collided with a horse float at Paekakariki and overturned. The driver of a motorscooter which caught in tramlines in

Willis street and skidded, suffered a fractured left leg and shock. He is: K. H. Hemus, clerk, Jackson street, Island Bay. A woman suffered lacerations to the side of her head and shock when she was struck by a car on The Terrace. She is Mrs F. Kelton, Dunns road, Silverstream.
