SUBMARINES OF RUSSIA
More Sighted In Pacific
(N.Z. Press Association—. Copyright) BRISBANE. May 2. Russian submarines were cruising around the Pacific in increasing numbers and there had been many identified sightings, Admiral Felix B. Stump said in Brisbane yesterday.
Reports of sightings were growing, he said, because the number of Russian submarines was increasing and their scope was widening.
Admiral Stump, commander-in-chief of United States forces in the Pacific, said it would be a mistake to say just where the submarines were being sighted because it could help the Communists militarily. “We have a pretty good estimate of the number of Russian submarines in the Pacific, however.”
Admiral Stump said he would like to see the Australian Navy playing a bigger part in the Pacific defence plan. He felt that the United States and Australia were in the same “spot” whether thev liked it or not. “The more Australian allies, we have the better,” he said. “For that reason, we wish Australia had a population of 200 million, not 10 million.”
