University Site
Sir, —I was pleased to see your recent leading article pointing out again to Canterbury College the foolishness of wishing to move from the present site. The Utopian idea of the large university at Ham is not very realistic. The property the college owns near its present site would be more than sufficient to supply space for modern buildings capable of giving at least twice the room of the present college. The original idea of gradually acquiring properties right down to tne river on both sides of Hereford street is a realistic one and would enable building to commence immediately. If the Engineering School feels it must move out, then it should be allowed to separate from the university, become a school of technology, which it really is now, and allow the university to expand in its present site. The people of Christchurch stand to lose a great deal and so does the college if it moves from its present historic site.—Yours etc., CIVIC SENSE. April 30, 1957.
