Childbirth
Sir, —I feel compelled to join issue’with the Parents’ Centre in their repeated mention of the need for a conscious birth. Are they not in danger of destroying the very rate of relaxation they advocate by suggesting that something is “wrong" and a conscious birth is not attained? There must be many of us not biologically capable of such an achievement, and yet, in my opinion, perfectly able to enjoy the first cries that reach us through the receding waves of subconsciousness, and the incomparable thrill of gasping, “What' is it?” Mrs Holmes’ reference to “the little white bundle” becomes a little tedious. Surely the roots of the wrong relationship she mentions go deeper than the circumstances of the maternity ward? If the Parents' Centre is out to challenge rigidity. I suggest they avoid such a fixed conception of what a satisfactory birth should be. Yours, etc., MOTHER OF THREE. April 30, 1957.
