Women On Juries
Sir, —Your correspondent should know women may volunteer Tor jury service here provided they have the stated qualifications. That women don’t volunteer shows they don’t warlt this con cession. Flourishing organisations. Red Cross. Plunket, kindergarten, etc., are manned mainly by women. Your correspondent does not realise how hard New Zealand housewives work. They run the home efficiently, garden, make clothes, etc., and squeeze in a little social life. They belong to societies for the betterment of mankind and no worthwhile cause is neglected by them, eg., C.0.R.5.0. Domestic help is costly and hard to obtain. Consequently the housewife has no time to sit all day in court. Apparently even in England, where daily helpers are cheap and plentiful, women are not too keen on jury service or they would see they had equal representation and not 10 men and two women, as stated.—Yours, etc., HOUSEWIFE.
