CURRENT NOTES
Miss Marjorie Best, president of the St. Margaret’s College Old Girls’ Association, welcomed a large number of members at the National Club Rooms yesterday when an informal morning tea party was held. Guests of honour included Miss J. Crosher (patron of the association) and Miss Nancy Wise, a member of the association, who is leaving next week for Australia, where she is on television. Miss Wise gave an account of her experiences while studying drama overseas. The Young Contingent of the Victoria League held a luncheon in Beath’s restaurant yesterday. Mr Arnold Wall addressed the gathering on the influence such countries as America. England and Australia had on New Zealand. Mr D. Fahey thanked the speaker. Miss Judith Macfarlane presided. World Membership Day was celebrated by the Christchurch branch of the Y.W.C.A. in the form of a panel discussion, compered by Miss Christobel Robinson, last evening. Members of the panel were Mesdames I. L. Holmes and R. H. Cranfield, Dr. P. J. Lawrence, and Mr J. R. Tye. The problems discussed were married women going out to work, aged parents and grandparents in the home, adolescents in the family, and physically handicapped children. The eighteenth birthday party of the Christchurch branch of the Southland Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association was held at the Sign of the Takahe, when there was an attendance of 36. The president (Mrs J. Campbell) welcomed the guests. The gathering stood in silence as a mark of respect to a former member, Mrs Treseder. Mrs J. H. Cocks and her group of singers presented solos, duets, quartets, and group songs. Miss Edna Neville also gave three humorous recitations. The president thanked the performers, and the birthday cake made by Mrs J. Senter and iced by Mrs Holland, was cut by Mrs Aitken, a former teacher at the school. A new member was initiated at the monthly meeting of the Linwood branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union by the president (Mrs Teague). Mrs McMillan gave a report on the recent Band of Hope competitions. A demonstration on ways of using crumpets was given by Mrs Ster> ti ford.
