High School Old Girls Hold Debutante Ball
The Christchurch High School Old Girls’ Association held its annual debutante ball last evening, when 26 debutantes, trained by Miss E. Cornyns Thomas, were presented to the president of the Old Girls’ Association (Miss I. F. Milnes) by the headmistress of the school (Miss R. F. C. Tyndall).
The debutantes’ dresses were white, the styles favouring bouffant skirts and fitting bodices. Each girl was presented with a posy of pastel shaded flowers, the gift of the association, after the debutante’s curtsey. Miss Milnes wore a gown of brocaded blue • and gold shot taffeta made with a full skirt flaring from pleats and cross-over bodice into a folded cummerbund waist, matching sleeveless coatee with an off-the-shoulder collar line.
Miss Tyndall’s pencil slim skirt and fitting bodice was of silver grey brocade with contrasting draped effect of peacock green at the hip line. Miss O. L. Eslick (convener of the dance committee) wore a gown of bronze and black brocade and wore a fur stole. The secretary of the Old Girls’ Association, Mrs O. A. Michel, was wearing a tie-silk gown of pale green, with small sprig of contrasting flowers. Bowls of autumn-tinted flowers and leaves placed about the alcoves formed the decorations, with the replica of the association’s crest placed in a prominent position on the wall.
