VITAL STATISTICS
Effect of Easter Ori Marriage Figures There were 181 marriage notices issued by the registrar in April, according to vital statistics supplied by the Registrar of Births. Deaths and Marriages (Mr A. A. Besley). In April of last year there were only 132 notices issued, and the increase of 49 this year is attributed to the fact that part of the Easter holiday, a popular time for weddings, occurred in March last year. There were 19 more marriages by registrar last month than in April last year. The birth rate for Christchurch is still on an upward trend and the number of births this year (1648) is higher than for the first four months of any previous year. The figures for April, 1957, with the corresponding figures for April last year in parenthesis, are: births 379 (364), deaths 142 (138), marriage notices issued 181 (132), marriages by registrar 43 (24). The figures for the first four months this year, with those for the corresponding period last year in parenthesis, are: births 1648 (1546), deaths 584 (582), marriage notices issued 650 (633) marriages by registrar 124 (110).
