£700,000 RAILWAY PROJECT

Marshalling Yards Near Auckland (New Zealand Press Assoviartoni AUCKLAND, April 30. The Government has approved a £700,000 project to establish modern railway marshalling yards at Westfield, the Minister of Railways (Mr J. K. McAlpine) announced in Auckland today. The new yard will be more than a mile long, will cover 4© acres and have more than 10 miles of track with accommodation for 1900 waggons. Tenders for substantial earthworks totalling 500,000 cubic yards will be called soon so that this work can begin immediately the winter ends. No completion date was given by the Minister, but it is expected that the major railways development programme will take several years. Then all goods trains to and from the north and south of Auckland will begin and end their journeys at Westfield.
