Elevated Railway
Sir, —Surely there must be a dangerous mental weakness in M.P.’s and local body members when they are so keen to spend dramatic millions on building 51 overbridges over the funny railways that flick through Christchurch. A deep and abiding faith in motor-cars is New Zealand’s leading religion; our railways are forgotten and “not understood.” The Colombo street overbridge should be delayed until a proper examination of Canterbury’s railways is made. Overgrown cities are out of date. Canterbury should plan for 100 cities of 10.000 population, linked by railways elevated on river metal. Some 3000 new homes are to be built close to where the Parade of Homes functioned. How many overbridges on order for this new homes progress?—Yours, etc., L. C. WALKER. April 30, 1957.
