Pedestrian Crossings

Sir,—l have been reading that the traffic department is to double patrols at pedestrian crossings to see that the regulations are observed. Can you kindly tell me when the sign shows “Cross now” is it permissible for vehicle traffic to cross over while pedestrians are crossing. I notice cars often do so. On Wednesday last a bus from High street direction travelling from 10 to 15 miles an hour came over when I, one of many, was crossing over immediately the sign was showing “Cross now.” This was at the Bank of New Zealand corner, possibly the busiest in Christchurch. We all had to scamper back and. with that delay, the lights showed “Don’t cross” before all got over. I take it the pedestrian has the right of way in safety when “Cross now” is showing.—Yours, etc.,

SAFETY FIRST. April 20, 1957. [The traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr G. P. Kellar) commented: “When the ‘cross now’ light appears in favour of pedestrians, the stop or red light is showing to vehicular traffic; therefore it is an offence for vehicles 'to pro ceed. Many cases such as the correspondent described have been detected and prosecutions taken.”]
