Women On The Jury

Sir, —I wonder how many of those who read this morning your leading article, “Reports of Preliminary Court Hearings,’’ noted that the jury before which Dr. Adams was tried and whose competence was so highly praised by “The Times” consisted of 10 men and two women. If they noticed this, did they ask themselves why women in New Zealand do not serve on juries? Can it be that New Zealand women shirk the onerous duty of serving on a jury? Can it be that New Zealand men feel themselves to be the sex in which alone repose the necessary qualities for jury service? I arrived from England recently, and have since been surprised to learn that the country which gave votes to women when in England women were fighting for enfranchisement against strong opposition, should consider that women were unsuited for jury service.—Yours, etc., FLORENCE M. SUGG ATE. April 29, 1957.
