(Rec. 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON. April 29. Senator Joseph McCarthy, the most controversial member of the United States Senate, was seriously ill at Bethesda Naval Hospital today with acute hepatitis, an inflammation of the : liver. Senator McCarthy, aged 47 ’ (Republican. Wisconsin) was ad- ; mitted to the hospital on Sunday. He has suffered from various ailments at times over the last few years. 1 On December 2, 1954, the Sen- ! ate, by a vote of 67 to 22, “con- ; demned” Senator McCarthy’s con- ’ duct, before a special committee which had investigated his feud with the Army. His opponents 5 have called him a demagogue and opportunist who injured many in- ’ nocent people and accomplished L little in his campaign against 1 Communists in the United States.
