TUBERCULOSIS IN POVERTY BAY

Increase Reported To Hospital Board

(New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, April 29.

In practically the whole of the district covered by the Cook Hospital Board’s tuberculosis officer (Dr. J. Simpson) during 1956-57 there has been an increase in the number of tuberculosis patients. The figures are 1409 for 1955-56 and 1533 for 1956-57, an increase of 124. The number of contacts has also increased from 763 to 903. The medical superintendent of the Cook Public Hospital (Dr. R. J. B. Hall), in a report to the board today, said that preventive measures—better housing, education, and B.C.G. vaccination—would require to be continued before a drop could be shown and the Trafford block could be used for other purposes. An increase in both admissions to the Trafford block and discharges was shown. Admissions rose from 78 to 110, an increase of 32, and discharges increased by 37 from 73 to 100. There were five deaths from tuberculosis during the year.
