N.Z. MEMBERSHIP OF S.E.A.T.O.

Peace Council’s Opposition

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 29.

Participation in S.E.A.T.O. as a military pact is detrimental to New Zealand’s relations with the countries of Asia, the harmony of the Commonwealth and the development of peace, in the opinion of the New Zealand Peace Council. This decision was part of a report supplied from the current annual conference of the council in Wellington. The statement on S.E.A.T.O. said that the council would urge the Government to recognise the People’s Republic of China ano move for its being in the seat allotted to China in the United Nations and the Security Council.

“Realising the close connexion between the economic prosperity of New Zealand and the prosperity of other countries, the council urges the Government to seek to extend trade with other countries, irrespective of their economic system, and to work for the removal of any existing barriers to trade,” the statement added.
