Lake Manapouri

Sir, —I concur with Mr Lush and many others in deploring the plan to desecrate the Lake Manapouri district by construcing a power station. I believe it would be a crime to do so. It seems to me it l would stamp us in the eyes of more cultured people as a philistine nation whose primary concern was the possession of refrigerators and washing machines. During the period of the occupation of New Zealand by Europeans there has been an almost completely ruthless destruction of its natural beauties. This was perhaps comprehensible in the early days when there was a struggle to survive; but it is not excusable now. I believe we cannot flout the principle of beauty indefinitely without grievous cost. —Yours, etc.. M. BEVAN BROWN. April 29, 1957.
