ATTITUDE OF ISRAEL

“Need To Uphold Status Quo” (Rec. 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 28. The Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Mr Abba Eban, said today that his country wanted the territorial integrity of Jordan preserve-! but was maintaining an attitude of detachment toward Jordan’s current troubles. Upholding the status quo in Jordan was “preferable to any other course we see available,” Mr Eban said in a television interview. He declined to speculate on what Israel might do if some other nation were to attempt to upset Jordan’s status. The critical situation in Jordan called for “a certain degree of reticence on my part,” Mr Eban said.

He declared that Israel wanted to play a stabilising role in the situation, by not doing or saying anything that might aggravate matters.
