Methven District High School Jubilee
Sir, —After being present at the celebration in 1932 and again this year, I was struck by the fact that, to my knowledge, no mention was made of that grand headmaster, the late M. G. Irwin, nor oi any oi his staff .at that time.
Mr Irwin was in Methven when the old school was burnt down, when the two Sunday school halls were used, and then first headmaster of the new school. I can well remember our first day at the new school and the state of the grounds, and how, under his leadership, trees and gardens were planted and a spirit of pride in our school was implanted in our minds which has been carried on through the years. Among many other things Mr Irwin started the school library, and the* reading of those good books is still fresh in our minds. This seems to be a forgotten period in the life of the school.—Yours, L. G. MAUGER. April 24, 1957.
