Shooting Accidents
Sir. —Within the last week, more or less, three shooting accidents have been reported. “Lies, damned lies, and statistics” notwithstanding, this 'might suggest an annual rate of 100 or so, with goodness knows how many “near misses.” An attempt, on a purely personal and local basis, to enlist the sympathies of gunsmiths in the matter of precautionary propaganda has been distinctly encouraging. Is it beyond the scope of some authority, if not to insist, at any rate to urge with all the weight of experience and common sense, that users of lethal weapons should be at least as proficient in their safe handling as are, say, those adjudged fit to drive a motorvehicle? —Yours, etc., M.T.
