Traffic Control
Sir, —Might I suggest that the “Detour” notices at the roadworks in Colombo street are misleading, and should be supplemented by “no entry” signs. The traffic department should know that if its signs are not being followed by motorists, the fault lies in the lack of clarity of the notices, and not in the alleged stupidity of drivers. It is becoming a routine procedure for some traffic officers to abuse the motorist for stupidity, and to rely on their power to “book” him or her if answered back. Having experienced this Hitlerism twice in the last week, in the presence of visitors, I suggest that some action should be taken to instruct these officers in the manners expected of persons so called. —Yours, etc., SOLICITOR.
