Mr Bill Johns was thrown from his speedboat at the New Brighton Power Boat Club’s meeting on the estuary on Saturday afternoon. Returning to the jetty after a race, Mr Johns discovered that the steering on his new boat. Condor IV. was not responding. He pulled the wheel hard over and unfortunately pushed his foot on the accelerator at the same time. The boat moved violently sideways, throwing Mr Johns into the water.
As the boat headed for the shore with the motor still running at a fast idle, Messrs Leon Brown and Noel Etwell, in Classic, set off after it. They were able to stop it before it ran aground.
