Proposed Amalgamation The transfer of a substantial area of Stoke from Waimea county to Nelson City is recommended by the Local Government Commission, which recently heard extensive evidence on the proposed change. Included in the proposed transfer is an urban area with some thousands of residents, an industrial zone, Nelson. airport, and the Nelson golf course nearby, and the seaside suburb of Monaco. A provisional scheme is to be issued as soon as possible. Adoption of the scheme would bring the population of Nelson City to more than 20.000, the required number for official city status, a status which Nelson, however, has had since 1858 by special Royal Warrant. The city population at last year’s census was 17,730.—(F.0.0.R.)
