NO TEAM FOR HOLLAND

N.Z. Association Decision (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 28. No New Zealand representative team will play in the next international women’s hockey tournament, to be held in Holland in 1959. In Wellington yesterday the New Zealand Women's Hockey Association made this decision, but gave its assurance that it would sponsor a touring team which could play in the international tourney. If such a team travelled to Holland, the players would have to pay, their own expenses, estimated at about £550 each. The association decided, however, that a New Zealand representative team would go to the international tournament in the United States in 1963. | These decisions were two of the many made by the association in their seven-hour annual meeting. On a national level, they decided . in favour of Ashburton as the venue for the 1957 Dominion tournament. The dates were fixed at August 30 to ; September 7. Next year’s Dominion • tournament • will be held in Wel- ' lington at the end of August, and I celebrations to mark the end of 50 ■ years women’s hockey in this couni try will be held in conjunction with ■ this tourney. i The association ruled that all senior teams under its jurisdiction would try two new rules from the International Hockey Federation till June 30. One of the rules replaces the 25yards bully with a free hit from the ! edge of the circle by the defenders. The other allows a flick and scoop stroke from a free hit, penalty cor- ’ ner, or corner. ‘ The meeting gave the New Zealand ’ Universities Women’s hockey team permission to tour Australia late this ■ year. With the permission, the as- . sociation gave a small grant. > The only discordant note at the : meeting was the association’s concern > at the lamentable lack of support . district associations were giving to : the annual New Zealand secondary i schoolgirls’ tourney. The general feel--5 ing was that much more could be , made of the three-day tourneys.
