WOMEN’S HOCKEY
First Round Matches 'Die round of senior matches in the Canterbury Women’s Hockey Association’s competitions was played on Saturday. The competition remains the same as last year, with nine teams entered. Results of firstround matches were:— University 7. Harewood 1. Carlton 9, Hornby 2. Teachers’ College 1, Digbys 1. Aranui 5, Christchurch West 3. Digbys v. Teachers’ College Play was even in the DigbysTeachers’ College match. M. Mann scored shortly after the commencement of play with a good shot. G. Davidson, with an excellent centre pass, gave Dickson a chance to equalise. Play ranged up and down the field without any further score. University v. Harewood Harewood was defeated by University 7-1. but this was no indication of play. Lacking a goalkeeper. Harewood was not strong in defence, and thus the University side had little difficulty in scoring from easy snots: The forward play was only mediocre, with little support from the half lines. The University defence was solid but not brilliant. With one match played better hockey will be seen from both teams in later games. Aranui v. Christchurch West The teams were:— Aranui.—H. Dobson; J. Fleete, G. Hall; P. Kendy, L. Farrant, G. Goodman; A. Snow, J. Kirk, G. Mayer, S. McCaw, B. Powell. Christchurch West.—J. Gray; J. Hall, L. Cox; P. Hayles, I. Cadigan. H. Grant; Y. Sylvester, D. Abernethy, A. Donaldson, J. Wise, J. Bennett. Christchurch West attacked from the first whistle, and D. Abernethy was unlucky not to score early. Sustained attacks did not yield any goals, and Aranui fought back to the attack. A. Snow made a good run which gave S. McCaw a goal for Aranui. This was quickly followed by another goal, this time by G. Mayer. Christchurch West continued to exert pressure until half-time, but was unable to score. J. Wise opened her side’s score with a goal from a melee. S. McCaw scored for Aranui again. Christchurch West’s next attack was led by the centre-half. I. Cadigan, and D. Abernethy goaled to make the score 3-2. Indecision on the part of West led to Aranui’s fourth goal, and soon after this S. McCaw made the total five. A. Donaldson scored from a rebound for West to make the final score Aranui 5, Christchurch West 3. Carlton v. Hornby The teams were:— Carlton.—V. Miller; M. Webb, L. Drummond; J. Gainsford, J. Brown, J. Thompson; H. Hamilton, S. Burrage, S. Tourell, C. Cole. Hornby.—B. Feary; M. Dwyer, R. Tongue: M. Luke, N. Turner, K. Kibblewhite; J. Shadwell, A. Fridd, S. Shadwell, B. Woodgate, D. Bartlett. This match was not as closely contested as had been expected, although the final score of 9 goals to 2 did not really do justice to the fine play of the Hornby team. C. Cole was the spearhead of the Carlton attack, and A. Tourell showed that she had lost none of her good form of last season. J. Thompson was very effective in right-wing attacks, and H. Hamilton and S. Burrage gave firm support to complete a very efficient forward line. The Hornby defence was severely tested tthroughout, but R. Tongue made repeated saves. The Hornby
forwards passed neatly among themselves, and were ably led by D. Bartlett.
