Horse Bolts Into Randwick Crowd
(Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 22. A riderless two-year-old colt, Gold Stakes, galloped into the crowd at Randwick today. The horse broke through the barrier stalls at the six furlongs post as the field lined up for the start of a race. He threw his jockey, Athol Mulley, galloped down the course proper, made a circuit of the track and then shot through a gap in the fence into the crowd on the flat. Gold Stakes scattered racegoers in all directions. The noise from the crowd and excited shouts from onlookers in the stands were so great that a police horse reared, throwing its rider.
Gold Stakes careered around the inner training track on the flat, and caught up with the crowd again, but by this time he had galloped two miles and a half and was weary. The clerk of the course and mounted police cornered the colt and took it back to its stall.
