Race Becalmed Off Queensland

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) BRISBANE, April 21. Unless there is an unexpected change in the weather in the next 12 hours, the Brisbane-to-Gladstone yacht race will be completed in the slowest time on record. From early today there was very little wind to help the yachts, and this afternoon they were becalmed over a distance of 80 miles along the Queensland coast. The leading yacht, Alvis, was becalmed at the half-way mark oft Indian Head, 153 miles from the starting point. The race began on Friday morning. The New Zealand yacht Christina. skippered by W. Mac Queen, of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, was today becalmed 90 miles from the starting point off Double Island Point. The first yacht had been expected to cross the finishing line at Gladstone. 307 miles from the starting point, late tonight. The weather forecast indicates that there is little possibility of any improvement in wind conditions and yachting officials believe it is unlikely that the race will end in the next 48 hours.
