HARMONICA BANDS’ ASSOCIATION
Annual Contest At Waimate The New Zealand Harmonica Bands’ Association’s annual contest was held at Waimate during the week-end. Nine bands and ensembles took part. Christchurch had a strong representation, two southern competitors being bands from Port Chalmers and Waimate. The Mayor of Waimate (Mr A. J. Mcßae) extended a welcome when the contest was opened in the Methodist Hall on Saturday morning. Mr A. F. Killner (chairman of the association) also spoke, expressing his pleasure at the interest displayed in the contest. The judge was Mr G. Martin. A street march was a prelude to the continuation of the contest yesterday afternoon, and a demonstration concert was held in the Olympia Hall last evening. The results were:— Section 4.—Class A: Junior diatonic solo—Raewyn Cox, 65 points, 1. Class C, senior diatonic solo: Mrs S. J. Manaton (Fre-de-Vans), 74 points, 1; Mrs M. M. McCutcheon (Christchurch Harmonica Band), 69 points, 2; Miss J. Foley (Christchurch Harmonica Band), 69 points, 3. Class C—Junior chromatic solo: Joan Mills (Silver Rhythm Ensemble), 78 points, 1; Elaine Sinclair (Harmony Harmonica Band), 73 points, 2; Dianne Atkinson (Skipper’s Harmonica Band), 68 points, 3. Class D.—Senior chromatic solo: Miss J. Smith (Fre-de-Vans), 77 points, 1; Mrs S. J. Manaton (Fre-de-Vans), 75 points, 2; Miss G. Killner (Silver Rhythm Ensemble), 74 points, 3. Class F.—Piano accordion solo: W. Thomas (Port Chalmers Harmonica Band), 78 points, 1; Mrs S. Foley (Christchurch Harmonica Band), 74 points, 2; R. G. Soutter (Fre-de-Vans), 73 points, 3. Class G.—Side drum solo: B. Hoy (Skippers), 72 points, 1; D. Cattermole (Skippers), 70 points, 2. Class H.—Chromatic bass solo: T. A. Camp (Port Chalmers Harmonica Band), 76 points), 1; Miss J. Quinlivan (Christchurch Harmonica Band), 69 points, 2; L. Porter (Silver Rhythm), 61 points, 3. Class I.—Chord instrument solo: Miss J. Quinlivan (Christchurch Harmonica Band), 71 points, 1; C. Johnson (Christchurch Harmonica Band), 70 points, 2. Class J.—Harmonica duet: Misses J. Mills and G. Killner (Silver Rhythm), 77 points, 1; Mrs S. J. Manaton and Miss J. Smith (Fre-de-Vans), 74 points, 2; Miss J. Quinlivan and C. Johnson (Christchurch Harmonica Band), 69 points, 3.
