CUNARD LINE’S SURPLUS

(N.Z. Press Association—. Copyright) LONDON, April 19. The Cunard Steamship Company has announced an operating surplus for 1956 of £8,419,874, against £7,405,872 for 1955. The surplus for the year, after providing for depreciation, taxation and other charges was £2,260,971 against £1,827,696 in 1955. During 1956, £500,000 was transferred to reserves and £759,561 was retained by subsidiary companies, compared with £500,000 and £294,106 respectively for the previous year. The company’s directors have recommended a final dividend on ordinary stock of 8 per cent., less tax, on the ordinary capital of £13,000,000. This made a total gross dividend for the year of £1,430,000 against £1,300,000 in 1955.
