VICE-REGAL BALL
FORTY-SIX DEBUTANTES PRESENTED At Government House, Wellington, on Wednesday night 46 debutantes were received by his Excellency the Governor-General (Sir Willoughby Norrie) and Lady Norrie. In the white and gold ballroom a string orchestra played as debutantes, preceded by their sponsors, in most cases their mothers, curtsied to their Excellencies. The ceremony of presentation was simple, but impressive. Major Michael Trasenster, the military secretary, announced the name of the sponsor, then that of the debutante. In turn each advanced and curtsied to his Excellency, then to her Excellency. Sponsor and debutante moved slowly on to take their seats and watch the remainder of the presentations. Lady Norrie wore a slightly trained gown of magnolia and gold satin brocade, with swathed bodice, crossed over at the back, and gored skirt. Her stole of nylon net was finished at the ends with rows of hand-woven gold, and she wore a diamond necklace and diamond and turquoise tiara. Miss Ann Ashton, lady-in-waiting, wore a silver grey brocade frock and bolero to match.
