DIAMOND HARBOUR WATER SUPPLY
Pipes Being Laid From Lyttelton FIRST SECTION PLACED ON SEA BED A start was made on Wednesday morning with the laying of pipes for a water main to supply Diamond Harbour with water from Lyttelton. ,The pipeline will cross the harbour on the sea bed. During the last few weeks the pipes have been connected up on shore into sections each about 100 yards long. Under the supervision of Mr H. G. Royds, consultiing engineer to the Lyttelton Borough Council, the first section of piping was lowered into the sea from the western reclamation on Wednesday morning. . A launch and dinghies towed the piping into position, and the first coupling was made by a diver, Mr L. Moore. Conditions were favourable, the sea being calm. _ ~ If the weather remains favourable the work should be completed in about two weeks, but the job of laying the six inch pipes can be done only when the sea is calm. The main is already laid on shore at Diamond Harbour. The pipeline will be one mile and 220 yards long.
