WOMEN’S TEST DRAWN
CLOTHIER SAVES N.Z. FROM DEFEAT
37 RUNS IN FIVE HOURS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 6. A splendid fighting innings by 30-year-old Joyce Clothier saved New Zealand from defeat in the second women’s test match at Worcester today. New Zealand declined an England challenge to score 338 runs in five hours and a half to win, and throughout the long day Clothier faced everything the English bowlers could hurl at her. Runs were purely incidental; she rarely attempted scoring strokes. Her score at the end was a mere 37, but she had stayed firm while losing six partners. Everything else in the day s play faded before this innings. Clothier refused to be tempted or lured into indiscretions, and she gave no real chance. Her hour-by-hour progress was: 1 in one hour, 10 tn two hours, 23 in three hours, 29 in four hours, and 37 in five hours. England did contribute to their own failure to win by a number of missed catches off the bats of other players. England is one up in the series, and the final test will be played at the Oval, starting on July 24. Scores are:—
