TRIBUTES TO MR HARRY FROST

UGBY FOOTBALL

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING The death in Auckland yesterday of Mr Harry Frost, a former representative Slayer and a life member of the New ealand Rugby Football Union, was reported to the management committee of the Canterbury Union last evening by the president (Mr W. C. Dailey). A motion was passed expressing the union s deepest sympathy with Mr Frost's relatives. Mr Frost represented Canterbury 36 times between 1893 and 1901, and played for New Zealand against Queensland in 1896. He was patron of the Christchurch Club. Mr Dailey said Mr Frost was a fine gentleman, who often entertained Canterbury players visiting the North 1sDelayed Postal Deliveries The late delivery of letters from the union notifying referees of their appointments for Saturday matches was reported by members to have resulted in some games being played without referees. Mr W. Fright said some letters had taken two days after posting to be delivered. and had reached the referees after their games were played. . The union decided to write to the Chief Postmaster about the delayed delivery of this first-class mail. An electrical company supplied details of a recently-developed flood-lighting system for night playing, giving soft and even light at a comparatively low cost. It was stated that about 66 fittings could illuminate a footabll ground, using a total of 80 kilowatts of electricity. These fittings could be mounted at a height of 60 to 65 feet, as against the previously used height of 110 feet. . The committee decided to refer the information the clubs for their consid-

P lay er Restricted to Own District A further letter was received from the North Canterbury Sub-Union about C. Neale, a plaver living at Lobum, in the sub-union T s district, who has recently played for the Belfast Club in the Canterbury Union’s district. Neale was told last season that he could play for Belfast for the rest of 1953, but could play in 1954 only for a club within the North Canterbury SubUnion’s boundaries. Learning that he was playing for Belfast again this year, the sub-union wrote to him and to the club, drawing their attention to the previous correspondence on the matter. In reply, the player and his club advised that he had been elected coach of the club’s sei.ior team, and had consequently become a selector also. The club said it hoped there would be no objection to Neale accepting the office of coach.

The union last evening upheld the subunion’s decision to debar Neale from playing for the Belfast Club, although agreeing that he could still remain a coach for it. The secretary (Mr A. C. Felton) read a telegram received from the secretary of the Wellington Union last Thursday, expressing regret that his union was unable to have a representative at the Canterbury union’s seventy-fifth jubilee function that night. The Wellington Union conveved its congratulations and best wishes. Many other unions also sent messages. A letter was received from the Marlborough Union, confirming Wednesday, September 1, as the date for the match between Canterbury B and Marlborough, in Christchurch. After leaving Christchurch, the Marlborough team will go to either Greymouth or Westport to play the holders of the Seddon Shield.
