MAGISTRATE’S COURT
TUESDAY (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) FIVE CHARGES OF TfIEFT Leslie Campbell, a soldier, aged 32 (Mr N. G. Hathaway) appeared for sentence on five charges of theft. He had previously pleaded guilty to stealing £2 in money, the property of Wallace Arthur Rae, a fountain pen, valued at £3, the property of Ruth Graham, 9s in money, the property of Alan Stanley Coleman, all on December 6, 1953, and £1 10s in money, the property of Bertie Arthur Grigg, on October 16, 1953. “You come here today on five charges of theft,” said the Magistrate. “This is quite consistent with the pattern of your behaviour. Since you appeared in 1941 on a charge of theft at Christchurch you have appeared on numerous occasions having nine previous convictions. You are a person who needs punishment.” Campbell was sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour for three months on each of the first two charges, the sentences to be cumulative, and three months’ imprisonment on each of the remaining charges, the sentences to be served concurrently with the first sentence, six months to be served in all PROBATION ! William Edward Clough, a barman, aged 28, appeared for sentence on charges of converting a motor-car valued at £BOO, the property of Donald Charles Robbie, and of the theft of £2O in money, the property of Heather Mary Cross, at Te Anau on March 9. Cough, who had previousy pleaded guilty, was admitted to probation for two years and ordered to make restitution of £2O within one month. Mr B. A. Newlove, who represented Clough, said that the offences were not of the usual run of case, but were committed on impulse. Accused had been nervous and depressed and under the strain had “panicked and run away like a small boy.” If released on probation he would, respond to help. “There is some reason for believing that when you committed these offences you were in an abnormal state of mind. I am going to give you a chance of rehabilitation,” said the Magistrate, admitting Clough to probation. IMPRISONMENT FOR THEFT Reginald Henry Alexander Rells, a baker, aged 37, who had previously pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a bicycle, valued at £l2, the property of John Leicester Catherall, on May 26, appeared for sentence. Mr D. J. Clark, who represented Rells, said that accused had been running late for work one day, succumed to temptation and took the bicycle. His record was not of the worst criminal type. As Rells had already spent 11 days in prison he asked the indulgence of the Court in sentencing him. Rells was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour for six months. PRISON FOR FRAUD Peter Stewart Rankin, a labourer, aged 35, appeared for sentence on a charge that with intent to defraud he obtained a motor-car valued at £3OO from James Quirke by falsely representing he was an employee of Fletcher Holdings, Ltd., and could carry out repairs and repaint the car at Fletcher Holdings, Ltd. He was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour for 12 months. “There seems little that one can take favourably into consideration as far as you are concerned. It was an escapade cunningly devised,” said the Magistrate. “You have been five times previously before the Court and you seem to, have received a great deal of leniency and you have not in the least profited by it.” (Before Mr Rex C.
