BROOKE NOW AT RICCARTON

NOVICE HURDLERS SHAPE WELL

Brooke was brought to Riccarton after racing at Washdykewlast Saturday, and has joined A. S. Ellis’s stable in the meantime. Brooke has been prepared by F. W. Ellis for Mr W. Swale throughout his career, and he will race at the Grand National meeting. A winner at the Dunedin winter meeting last month, Brooke did well to carry top weight of 9-9 into fifth place In the Beaconfleld Hack Handicap at Washdyke. He is a rising four-year-old gelding by Super from Flicker’s Daughter.

Four Riccarton-trained novice hurdlers shaped well in their schooling yesterday. Their efforts were features of a quiet morning’s work. Prosecutor (J. W. McDonald) jumped the two pony hurdles and then five standard hurdles. He showed cleverness on his feet to recover after slipping into one fight. Tired Hands (T. Lyons) and Tammy Troot (J. Meikle) were companions in a run over six hurdles. Both jumped confidently. Tired Hands established a lead with a splendid leap at the last flight. I Manos (G. G. Hampton) jumped three hurdles safely. He should soon be ready to start racing as a hurdler. Southern Horses for Trentham

Baffling Eyes and Border Reiver were two southern horses on the tracks at Riccarton yesterday. They continued their journey north last evening on their way to Trentham for the Wellington winter meeting. Baffling Eyes will have his first race there in the Parliamentary Handicap next Wednesday. He will be ridden by R. O. Cairns.

Baffling Eyes failed on a fast track at Washdyke last Saturday, but the best has been seen of him in bad ground. Under those conditions, he has compiled a good record in the south. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s Birthday Handicap was his fourth successive win and his fifth in six starts.

Border Reiver is in the hack steeplechase on Saturday. He, too, has done best in bad ground, which is more than a possibility on Saturday. B. J. Langford, his jockey, will ride Lay Off in the Wellington Steeplechase, and Sonloch, top weight in the hack hurdles. R. J. Skelton, who went north yesterday, will ride Locherbie and Red Tinge; and his brother, F. H. Skelton, has been engaged to ride Indian Sue on Saturday. F. H. Skelton won on Indian Sue at the C.J.C. meeting.
