HUGHES TO RIDE TESLA
AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY TO REPORT TO STEWARDS (N.Z. Piess Association—Copyright) BRISBANE, July 6. A surprise switch in the riding engagements for the Doomben Cup involves the engagement of G. F. Hughes a New Zealand jockey, for Tesla. It was understood yesterday that W Briscoe would have the ride, and the owner, Mr A. T. Marinovic, has told Briscoe that he will pay him the fee for the winning or losing ride. Briscoe said at Doomben this morning that he would bring the matter to the attention of the stewards at Doomben on Saturday. Mr Marinovic said that he had no criticism of Briscoe’s riding, but had taken the chance to secure Hughes because Hughes had ridden Tesla previously. Hughes rode Tesla in work at Doomben this morning. There was something of a stir at Doomben when Paper Strip, the second favourite for the cup, appeared with his off foreleg heavily bandaged His owner said there was nothing wrong, and that the bandage was precautionary. Paper Strip put plenty of heart into his work, and seemed to gallop better than Rising Fast, now the cup favourite. Silver Kingdom moved freely over seven furlongs in Imin 30|sec, the last three in 39£sec. Paper Strip (N. Sellwood) ran an easy seven furlongs in Imin 34sec, the last two in 29sec. Rising Fast (C. T. Wilson) took Imin 36sec for seven furlongs, well on the bit throughout. Tesla was not out to make time, and ran five furlongs in Imin 6fsec, the last two in 26fsec.
