RACING
W. J. Broughton appears assured of winning the jockeys’ premiership for the 1953-54 season. With four week’s racing yet to be held, he is in a very comfortable position with a tally of 62 wins.. His nearest challenger, G. F. Hughes, has ridden 53 winners.

Broughton has won the premiership on 10 previous occasions. He first topped the list in the 1936-37 season. It is not likely that iie will better his best score for one season this term, for in the 1938-39 season he rode 80 winners.
K. Voitre holds the record for winning rides in one season with a tally of 123, which he established in the 1931-32 season. In the 1930-31 season, Hi E. Gray rode 116 winners. The Trainers F. Trilford, of Wasdyke, has a good chance of winning the trainers’ prem« ier&iip for the first time in his career. Brown Baron’s success in the main event at Washdyke on Saturday brought Trilford’s tally to 32 wins, and this is four more than his closest A. E. Didham (Wingatui) and J. L. McDonald (Te Awamutu), who share second place with 28 wins each.
Fourth oh the trainers’ list at this stage is T. F. Verner, Takanini, who has produced the widnerp of 26 races. The largest number of races won in a season by a trainer in the last 30 years is 52.
